World Mental Health Day 2024: How to support colleagues & care for your own wellbeing

World Mental Health Day is an important reminder that mental health matters to everyone, including those we work with. In the fast-paced world of modern work, it’s easy to overlook the emotional struggles of our colleagues. Yet, offering support can make a world of difference.

Supporting a colleague’s mental health begins with a genuine, warm inquiry. A simple, sincere “How are you doing?” can open the door for meaningful conversations. Finding the right time and place is essential—make sure the setting is comfortable for your colleague, and give them your full attention without rushing. Active listening is key: maintain eye contact, use open body language, and respond thoughtfully. Importantly, don’t push for details beyond what they’re ready to share. When the conversation wraps up, recap any key points and follow through on any commitments you’ve made.

Talking Opens Doors and Reduces Stigma

Talking about mental health can be intimidating, but sharing your feelings with supportive colleagues, friends, or family is a powerful way to reduce stigma. When we open up, we invite others to do the same, creating an environment where mental health is treated with the care and importance it deserves. If you’re feeling the pressures of work, find someone to talk to. This simple act can improve your mental well-being and foster a more supportive workplace culture.

Physical Health Supports Mental Well-Being

Regular movement, whether through structured exercise or simple daily activities, can significantly improve mental health. Exercise boosts self-esteem, sharpens focus, enhances sleep quality, and promotes overall well-being. Even taking short breaks to stretch or go for a walk during the workday can make a big difference.

A balanced diet is just as important. Proper nutrition fuels both your body and mind, so plan regular meals, stay hydrated, and aim for healthy choices, especially on busy workdays. A well-nourished body is better equipped to handle stress and stay energized throughout the day.

The Power of Supportive Relationships

Strong, supportive relationships are essential for mental health. Maintaining a healthy work-life balance is crucial, and addressing workplace tensions early on can prevent them from escalating. It’s important to seek out trusted colleagues, mentors, or supervisors for guidance when needed. These connections not only provide emotional support but can also offer practical advice for managing workload and workplace dynamics.

Don’t Be Afraid to Ask for Help

It’s normal to feel overwhelmed at times, especially in high-pressure work environments. Don’t hesitate to seek support when needed. Many workplaces offer Employee Assistance Programs (EAPs) or occupational health services that provide confidential help. Your GP is also a valuable resource for mental health concerns, providing support or referrals to specialists if necessary. Asking for help isn’t a sign of weakness—it’s a proactive step towards maintaining your well-being.

Take Time for Yourself

Maintaining mental health requires intentional breaks and quality rest. Regular breaks during the workday, along with planned time off, are crucial for reducing stress and recharging your energy. Prioritize disconnecting fully during your time off to prevent burnout and come back refreshed. Managing your workload effectively and setting boundaries are key to sustaining long-term mental health.

Do What You Love

Engaging in activities you enjoy and are good at can significantly reduce stress and improve your mood. Whether it’s a hobby outside of work or tasks you excel at in your job, these activities can help you stay focused and balanced, especially during stressful times. Achieving something you’re passionate about not only boosts self-esteem but also brings a sense of fulfillment that can help you navigate life’s challenges.

Embrace Your Uniqueness

Finally, embrace who you are. Your uniqueness is your strength. Accepting yourself as you are boosts self-confidence and helps you handle life’s challenges with resilience. Remember, your self-worth extends far beyond work achievements—fostering a balanced sense of self helps you stay grounded, no matter what life throws your way.

On this World Mental Health Day, let’s commit to supporting each other and prioritizing our own mental health. Whether through small gestures of support, or taking time to care for ourselves, every effort counts in creating a healthier, more compassionate world.
